In today's competitive market, successful residential contractors need to be backed up by a strong team.

ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes, developed by the Office of Energy Efficiency of Natural Resources Canada, is an independent home energy assessment service that helps you deliver more value to your customers. ecoENERGY provides customers with an accurate snapshot of all energy-related aspects of their home and shows where improvements can be made. EcoENERGY links energy efficiency to comfort and savings - a powerful combination that has many customer benefits. This service makes it easier for you to make the sale to your customers by giving them the right renovation advice and encouraging them to focus on value, not price.

GRANTS FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS

Homeowners are now being offered grants from the Government of Canada toward energy-related improvements to their homes. Only houses that have been evaluated both before and after renovations using the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes service will be eligible for a grant.

For full details about who and what kind of house is eligible for grants, please call our office at 604-495-6757 and a certified energy advisor will be happy to answer all of your questions. You can also request publications detailing the eligibility criteria and grant amounts to hand out to your customers.

YOU'RE IN CHARGE

ecoENERGY is inexpensive, fast, and available when you need it. It's a service that you can use to give your company a competitive edge.

When your client is planning energy upgrades or when you see the potential to incorporate energy upgrades into your renovation work, take the opportunity to recommend the ecoENERGY service.

How can the ecoENERGY Retrofit service help my business?

As a professional renovation contractor, you know it's important to consider energy efficiency when planning renovation or home improvement projects. Often, what's most important to your customers is top quality work, preferred lifestyle features, increased comfort and, of course, value for money.

INCREASE YOUR SALES

With ecoENERGY, it's easier to keep your customer's project plans on solid ground. ecoENERGY will help you explain the value of an extra investment in energy retrofits and demonstrate the benefits to your customer. It backs you up with a detailed, independent report on the home's current level of energy efficiency and shows how much its efficiency will improve if the recommended changes are made. The grant also provides an additional incentive for customers to get the work done soon, while grants are still available.

INCREASE YOUR CUSTOMER'S SATISFACTION

Sometimes customers don't realize that factors that may not be obvious such as poor windows, lack of insulation or an inefficient heating system make it a real challenge to deliver the comfort and quality they expect in their renovation. This is where having an ecoENERGY advisor on your team really pays off. Implementing the recommendations made by the energy advisor is sure to lead to an improvement in your customer's home comfort - fewer drafts and cold spots, more even temperatures throughout the house and proper ventilation. That means satisfied clients, more referrals and more business for you.

How the ecoENERGY Retrofit service works

1. Your customer calls Sage Energy (604-495-6757) for the pre-retrofit assessment ($150 cost). They will be mailed a report with the details of the evaluation and a complete action plan.
2. Your customer selects the improvements from the home energy action plan that they would like to complete. Then they implement the recommended energy upgrades within 18 months.
3. Your customers calls Sage Energy (604-495-6757) for the post-retrofit evaluation. Sage Energy will complete grant application paperwork and submit on your customers' behalf. ($75 cost).
4. Wait for up to 90 days to receive the cheque based on the eligible upgrades that were performed in step 3.

How much does this cost?

Pre-Retrofit Assessment: $150.00
Post-Retrofit Assessment: $75.00

How much can my customers get back?

Each grant will depend on the individual upgrades completed. The home energy evaluation will include recommended upgrades based on the anticipated impact each upgrade will have on the home's energy efficiency, and the corresponding grant amount expected as a result. For example, replacing an old gas furnace with a highly energy efficient ENERGY STARŪ qualified model usually saves about 35% on heating bills, so this type of upgrade would receive a grant of several hundred dollars or more. Installing insulation in an unfinished basement is also a very effective upgrade and would be remunerated accordingly. On the other hand, replacing windows is a costly upgrade that usually has limited effect on energy savings, so the grant per window would be modest. It is expected that the average grant for a single property will be $1,000, up to a maximum of $ 5,000.

For a detailed listing of the upgrades eligible to receive grant money and the amounts please read the Government publication titled "Retrofit Your Home and Qualify for a Grant!"

What is included in the on-site assessment?

  • A top to bottom inspection of the home's energy efficiency profile including an air leakage test ("blower door" test), insulation inspection, window inspection, and heat system inspection.
  • A 9+ page report detailing the upgrade recommendations, grant amounts and an energy efficiency rating label that shows how energy efficient the home is compared with others in the region.
